President: J Melvin Janzen

J. Melvin Janzen is a retired chaplain who worked as a staff chaplain at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, from 2001-2014. There Melvin specialized in the grief and bereavement services of the hospital. He helped to write and revise several editions of the bereavement booklet given to families after a patient death. Statewide, Melvin was active in the Virginia Chaplains Association serving on the executive committee to plan their annual gatherings.

Prior to chaplaincy at UVA, Melvin was half-time staff chaplain at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin, from 1991-2000, while serving as pastor of Madison Mennonite Church. During that time he worked to become Board Certified in the Association of Professional Chaplains (1998).

In the 1980s, Pastor Janzen served as pastor of Sermon on the Mount Mennonite Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is a graduate of Eastern Mennonite College (B.S. in Sociology, 1972) and the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary (Master of Divinity, 1979).


Former President: Kenton Derstine

Kenton Derstine

Kenton Derstine is a chaplain from Harrisonburg, Virginia and is serving on the MHF Board from 2013-2016. He is Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Pastoral Education & Mentored Ministry at Eastern Mennonite Seminary. He graduated from Eastern Mennonite University and AMBS, and then entered Clinical Pastoral Education and served Chaplain Internships and Residencies in three different hospitals, eventually gaining certification as a CPE Supervisor. Kenton has also been a beekeeper for over forty years. He and his wife, Rhoda, are the parents of three adult children.





Secretary: Erin Dye

Erin Dye is the Campus Chaplain at Adriel, Inc., a residential and foster care agency for youth in out of home care in Ohio. Erin works with the residential youth, leading groups, worship services, and community connections and has been in the position since 2010. Erin graduated with a Bachelor of Psychology with a minor in Bible from Milligan College, Johnson City, TN and is currently enrolled in a Masters of Social Work program at The Ohio State University. Erin lives with her husband Alex, a pastor at Oak Grove Mennonite Church, in West Liberty, OH. Erin is grateful for her role as a chaplain with adolescents as it allows her to use many of her giftings and appreciates the Mennonite Chaplains Association as a place for chaplains to mutually support and share how God is working in lives of their clients.


Treasurer: Jarvis Hochstedler

Chaplain Jarvis Hochstedler is an ordained Mennonite minister with over 20 years pastoral experience.  A 1983 graduate of LIFE Bible College in Los Angeles, CA, he has served the church at many levels from Youth For Christ director to senior pastor.  He currently serves as chaplain at Sunnyside Village in Sarasota, FL where his ecumenical experience and genuine love for seniors brings an abiding joy for pastoral care ministry.
